The Metacom Resort offers a perfect starting point for walks to the nearby villages, chapels and of course to the sea. Depending on the chosen length of the hike, it is usually possible to start directly at the resort.
Profiti Elias Chapel
The Profiti Elias Chapel is reachable in about 45 minutes walking. The hike leads through olive groves to the base of the peak and from there, an easy path to the chapel. At the top you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the south coast and the open sea.
For the more attentive and sure-footed hikers, there is also a narrow path at the back of the peak that leads downhill.
Anidri Gorge
Also the gorge of Anidri can be reached via olive groves directly from the property. The picturesque landscape leads through changing vegetation along the river, which carries water in the winter months. The way down the gorge is accompanied by rocks and requires small climbing in some places, unless you prefer to use the rope stairs.
The sea can be reached in about 90 minutes walking time down the gorge and you will be welcomed at Anidri beach with turquoise blue sea and refreshments from the local beach tavernas.
Azogires
Another hiking trail leads in about 120 minutes from the property to the enchanting village of Azogires, with its churches, caves and waterfall. The well accessible path leads along the slope through varied landscapes, past old settlements to the monastery of the 99 holy fathers.
Continuing along the path, you will reach Azogires and find refreshment in the legendary Cafénion, a selection of different dishes and, with a bit of luck, the host Lucky, who knows every secret of the dreamy village.
Elafonisi
A hike to the legendary beach of Elafonisi is recommended if you are planning a day trip. From the property, you start first by car to get to the beach of Krios. There the hike begins on the tracks of the European long-distance hiking trail E4. The total hiking distance to the beach of Elafonisi is 10 km and can be walked in about 4 hours with breaks at the different beaches you’ll pass by.
The hiking trail captivates with breathtaking views and hidden beaches, which invite you to dream and have far less people around than their famous neighbour. The way home can be done by ferry, bus or taxi, as it is not recommended to go in both directions in one day. There is no water supply on the whole route, so you should always make sure you have enough drinking water with you.
Sougia
If you follow the European long-distance hiking trail E4 in eastern direction, you will reach the coastal town of Sougia after a distance of 15km and a walking time of about 5h. You can start again directly from the resort and walk through the gorge to the sea, or you can drive by car to Paleochora and start from there. The way to Sougia is also very varied, but should only be walked with sturdy shoes.
Before arriving in the coastal place, you pass the excavation place of Lissos with the Asclepios temple and a spring that is water-bearing during the whole year. Contrary to the hiking tour to Elafonisi, during the whole tour up to Sougia there is only twice the possibility to cool down in the sea. The best way to get back from Sougia is to take the ferry and from Paleochora, you can either take a taxi or get into your own car if you parked there in the morning.
